Phylloxera was a disaster for the entire French wine industry. Buzet also suffered the horrors of this American aphid, which ravaged vines and ‘terroirs’ and ruined many a family. But Gascons are stubborn. They replanted their vines and started to make wine again, initially only for their own consumption. They wanted to be sure that it would be good before they put it on the market. As good as people’s memories said it was. After much patience and perseverance, the new wine returned to the cellars. It was celebrated and named “Renaissance”. Which summarised the whole story and nicely expressed the fact that the ‘terroir’ had come wonderfully back to life.
The 2005 rosé really makes the taste buds sing. It could almost bring you back to life.
